Gauntleys Top Ten Cigars of 2014

Over the last few weeks via our Facebook page I have been counting down the Gauntleys list of top ten cigars for 2014. Finally you can now view it here in it's full glory as I finally reveal the long awaited top 3. The following list reflects what the great British public have been buying and may I say what fantastically great taste you all have!

The list also reflects the changing tastes of the cigar smoking cognoscenti, possibly reflecting a shift from the old order of Cuba and favouring the New World producers of Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Obviously, only time will tell if this is a genuine shift in direction for the retail cigar industry, but the one thing that I can say is, that all the cigars on this list offer great smokes no matter what the price or the style.

The Top 10 is based on sales of single stick, hand-made cigars at Gauntleys sold over the last 12 months.

1. Cohiba Siglo IV - Cuba 2. Flor de Las Antillas Belicoso - Nicaragua 3. Rocky Patel 15th Anniversary Toro - Nicaragua 4. Montecristo No.2 - Cuba 5. Romeo Y Julieta Churchill Tubos - Cuba
6. Alec Bradley Black Market Robusto - Honduras 7. Aging Room Mezzo - Dominican Republic 8. Chinchalero Reserva Epicure No.2 9. Partagas D4 - Cuba 10. Charatan Corona - Nicaragua

1.   Alec Bradley Black Market Robusto

52
Honduras
RING GAUGE
Medium

The Toro size that has been with us for over a year now has always proved really popular, so by customer demand we are finally listing the Robusto size. A classic new world maduro cigar. Packed full of earthy, spicy flavours with a luscious creamy sweet coating.

2.   Charatan Corona

42
Nicaragua
RING GAUGE
Light - Medium

Four years ago, Tor Imports Ltd acquired Charatan from Dunhill Tobacco of London with the ambition of improving the product offering and reinvigorating the brand.

In 2018 we took the first step and transferred the production of Charatan cigars to Joya De Nicaragua; the country's oldest and most prestigious factory. This allowed us to maintain the unique blend of high-grade tobaccos and ensured we could offer a premium handmade cigar at an affordable price.

Now it is time for the next step in the Charatan story with a makeover that reflects the ambition and intention of Tor Imports Ltd as the brand owner.

As we enter the Roaring Twenties, we are giving Charatan a new look that combines legacy and mythology with a bright future for the brand.

The dancing unicorn is a distinctly British symbol of individuality while the azure and white band reminds us of Nicaragua. This combination of Nicaraguan cigar making and British heritage is unique to Charatan and has been at the heart of the brand for over one and a half centuries.

Of course, our distinctive and popular blend remains unchanged and Charatan cigars continue to be exclusively tailored to the tastes of the discerning British aficionado.

Charatan has been blended uniquely for the British cigar smoker using a subtle blend of Seco, Ligero and Volado filler leaves bound with an Indonesian binder from Besuki and wrapped in shade grown Java. A light and medium smoke that can be enjoyed anywhere, at any time. A must stock for every humidor.

3.   Cohiba Siglo IV

46
Cuba
RING GAUGE
Medium

As with all Cohiba Siglo cigars the flavours are little smoother and creamier compared to other Cohibas. The Siglo IV has the reputation of being one the best from the Siglo Range (the Siglo VI is outstanding too). The larger 46 gauge allows more flavours to saturate the palate with rich & complex flavours. Distinct grassy, herbaceous flavours are very prominent, with creamy sweet bean flavours making their presence known throughout the cigar. Definitely not for the inexperienced or Dominican smoker due to rich flavours and long smoking time.

4.   Montecristo No 2

52
Cuba
RING GAUGE
Medium - Full

Voted the World’s finest cigar in 2015 by the cigar journal and Cigar Aficionado. Legendary is an over used word but not in this case. The ‘ Monte 2’ is certainly full-bodied but not overwhelmingly so. Brimming with aromas of leather, spice and cinnamon the flavours are sweet and gentle.

"The undisputed king of torpedoes is the Montecristo No. 2. The stately smoke with the pointy tip is known the world over ... extraordinary, teeming with rich but not overwhelming flavors of leather, such sweet spices as cinnamon and nutmeg and the cigar's trademark tangy wood note. They have enough flavor and power to satisfy those who smoke cigars on a regular basis without overwhelming those who puff less frequently." - Cigar Aficionado, Jan 2014

5.   Partagas Serie D No 4

50
Cuba
RING GAUGE
Full

This has always been a perennial favourite of ours. It is certainly a full-on cigar and, to the uninitiated perhaps a little too much, but the complex array of flavours and aromas are certainly worth the effort. A perfect accompaniment to a fine Champagne Cognac!

"Earthy and floral, this attractive robusto picks up creamy chocolate-like notes buttressed by coffee bean and a hint of coconut" - Cigar Aficionado, August 2014, 92 Points

6.   Romeo Y Julieta Churchill

47
Cuba
RING GAUGE
Medium

This large Churchill offers a more complex array of flavours than the smaller sized Romeo y Julietas. It begins with light warm roasted undertones slowly growing into a more complex but smooth taste.
