Oliva - Producer of the Cigar Of The Year 2014
The history of Oliva can be traced all the way back to the late 1800's when, in Cuba, Melanio Oliva started growing tobacco on his farm. Over the next 50 years or so this tradition was carried on by his family, but it was the great grand son of Melanio, Gilberto Oliva Snr who was the first family member to actually make and produce his own cigars. Having left Cuba in 1964, Gilberto and his son started to work for Plasencia in 1995, creating the Gilberto Oliva cigar for them. Encouraged by their success, both father and son, set up their own business under the Oliva name just a mere year later.
The rest they say is history, although the road was not always smooth! Having spent a decade in the cigar wilderness producing cheap, low quality cigars, in 2006 the company, in a move of almost desperation, and facing the prospect of running out of money, turned to the aged tobacco reserves of Gilberto Senior. Suddenly everything changed! The quality of tobacco, not only changed the flavour profile of Oliva cigars in production but also improved the quality immensely, with the Serie V being an immediate hit. In 2014 Oliva achieved the ultimate prize winning the Cigar Of The Year 2014 in Cigar Aficionado Magazine for the Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado.

This is one of those cigars which really is the real deal. Medium to full-bodied, it starts initially with a burst of sweet leather, spice and nuts and progressively moves towards coffee and earth as you smoke down the stick. There is good intensity in the flavours which persist until the last draw. I love the shape and the fact that it is box-pressed too - it just ticks all my boxes!
