Cigar Evening Wednesday November 9th - Single
For our final Cuban cigar evening of the year, we have decided to take a little look at a couple of lesser-known Cuban brands. Although not as famous as the likes of Montecristo, Partagas and Cohiba, they are equally as exciting and enjoyable! We will be joined by Tim Owen of Hunters & Frankua who will guide us through both of the following cigars.
Sancho Panza Belicoso (rrp £27.70)
Like other great Havana brands such as Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta, Sancho Panza takes its name from a masterpiece of world literature. In Don Quixote, the famous 17th Century Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes, Sancho Panza served the errant knight as his faithful squire. His name was first used for a Havana in 1848 and since then it has enjoyed a reputation for quality amongst discerning smokers. Rolled with a medium-bodied blend of filler and binder tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo zone, all sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long-filler handmade. These Belicoso measure 5 and a half by 52 ring gauge and deliver a fantastic, medium-bodied elegant smoke.
Punch Short De Punch (rrp £26.60)
Punch is one of the very oldest Havana brands. Founded by Don Manuel López of Juan Valle & Co in the mid-19th Century with an eye to the booming British market where a humorous magazine of the same name was much in vogue. A contented Mr Punch, the clown who personified the magazine, is still featured on every box, cigar in hand and surrounded by 19th Century images of cigar making that remain virtually unchanged over a century and a half later. In 1931 Punch became associated with Hoyo de Monterrey and the two brands have been made at the same factory ever since. Today the factory is La Corona.
The Short De Punch is the first new addition to the brand’s standard portfolio for over 20 years and is a fine example of the modern Havana cigar. It also displays the well-balanced and uncomplicated refinement that has made Punch such a popular brand in the UK for over 150 years.
You can taste both of these wonderful cigars from 7.45pm on the 9th of November at the Trent Navigation, Meadow Lane, Nottingham.
Full details to be added soon! Keep checking back for updates.
