Foundation Cigars
Nestled in the heart of the Connecticut River Tobacco Valley, one of the world’s premier tobacco-growing regions, there’s a building in a tobacco field. This isn’t another curing barn though; this isn’t another fermentation warehouse; this is the world’s only corporate cigar office based on a farm – the office of the Foundation Cigar Company.
Nick Melillo may not be a name that you are familiar with, but one of the brands that he helped create might possibly be, and that would be Drew Estate. It was Nick, along with Jonathon Drew, that helped set up Drew Estate in the late 90’s and created one of the biggest cigar producers on the planet. In 2014, Drew Estate got sold to Swisher and Nick decided to start again on his own, creating Foundation Cigars.
Nick is passionate about Connecticut Broadleaf and especially the leaf grown in the Connecticut River Tobacco Valley, as it’s considered to be the best in the world. The tobacco itself can be brittle if not handled carefully, so every part of the process needs to be carefully controlled. If done well, the results, as Nick has proven, can be phenomenal. Connecticut Broadleaf cannot be grown or replicated elsewhere in the tobacco growing world – these conditions are unique.
It was George Frakes of 1573 cigars who introduced me to the world of Nick Melillo and his amazing cigars - every single one is a masterpiece, every single one is a delicious example of his craft, every single one (so far) has ranked in or around my top 10 cigars, the Olmec Toro is my number 1 for 2024. Get some now, you will hopefully be as impressed as I have been! Eann - Cigar Buyer
Foundation Cigars Olmec Toro - Single
The Heart Lands of the Olmecs is the tropical lowlands of modern-day Mexican states of Veracruz, Tabasco, and San Andres Tuxtla. Today, this is the same region that grows some of the finest San Andres Negro wrapper tobacco. This seed variety is considered one of the oldest seed varieties in the world.
Olmec cigars contain the finest Nicaraguan fill tobaccos from the Esteli and Jalapa valleys. After Fermentation, these filler tobaccos are bale aged for three years before arriving on the production floor. The San Andres Negro wrapper tobacco comes from the rich volcanic soil of the land of the Olmecs. It is fermented slowly at low temperatures to preserve the natural oils that give flavour, which is the technique Nicholas Melillo developed when he originally introduced the San Andres leaf to premium cigars in the early 2000s.
The blend is a true masterpiece in the storied stables of Nicholas Melillo – light to medium in body, exceptionally well balanced and notably refined, whilst using that San Andres in a way that differs to almost all other uses on the market. These qualities have led to the Olmec being a seriously sought after cigar, consistently selling out in shops worldwide and being honoured as Cigar Snob Cigar Of The Year and on 2023’s Cigar Afficionado Top 25.
A truly befitting homage to the Olmec – the original cigar smokers.
Foundation Cigars Tabernacle Torpedo - Single
Made with the finest example one of the most sought-after wrapper leaves in the world, The Tabernacle Broadleaf Maduro is everything that could be desired in a serious, premium cigar. The cigar is patiently aged with the finest Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper in the world, a phenomenal San Andre s binder and fillers from Estelí in Nicaragua and the Jamastran Valley in Honduras.
Full in body with an exceptional natural sweetness that works alongside white pepper, dark chocolate and dried fruits. Hugely complex and eminently satisfying!
Foundation Cigars Charter Oak Toro - Single
An homage to Foundation Cigar Company’s home state of Connecticut, the Charter Oak Broadleaf truly has achieved what was deemed impossible, and truly has turned a large part of the cigar market on its head.
Lines at this price point are usually produced with lower quality tobacco from less sought after farms, fermented for a shorter period. Not the Charter Oak. Charter Oak uses tobacco from the same farms and indeed many of the same plants as other Foundation cigars, with one key difference. Charter Oak uses predominantly seco in its blend. Seco has a much higher yield than any other part of the tobacco plant, meaning per plant and per cigar, many more usable leaves are produced per individual plant. This ultimately reduces the cost for the consumer whilst maintaining the same quality.
This quality really shines through in the rich, aromatic profile present. The true Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper crowns this market-breaker beautifully, giving great depth of sweetness present to the immediate palate.
Foundation Cigars Highclere Castle Robusto - Single
Lord Carnarvon, Adam Von Gootkin and Nicholas Melillo (Foundation Cigar Company) are men with great historical insight, pinpoint attention to detail and veritably vast vision, and it is with these qualities that they embarked on their mission to follow the Highclere Castle Edwardian. Their goal was incredibly simple yet seemingly impossible – using records meticulously kept at Highclere Castle, they would recreate the kind of cigar that was smoked at Highclere Castle during the 19th century, the very first Cuban cigars smoked in Great Britain, the very kind of cigar that was smoked in celebration by the 4th Earl following the very founding of Canada, the very kind of cigar that was smoked by a young Edward VII on his numerous social and political visits to Highclere Castle, the very kind of cigar that was smoked in those hallowed walls by royalty, aristocracy, politicians, artists and musicians, all at their very peak during the Victorian era.
The Highclere Castle Victorian is the successful fruit of this noble endeavour. Rated 93 by Cigar Afficionado and reaching their top 25 of 2020, the Highclere Castle Victorian is a distinctly unusual, delicately balanced, and notably refined smoke. Boasting the very finest upper priming Ecuadorian Habano wrapper that is simply brimming with oil and beautifully presented in a rosado colorado shade, rare and meticulously selected Mata Fina binder, and fillers of astounding corojo and criollo from Nicaragua’s Estelli, Jalapa and Ometepe. Yes, this is yet another astounding and groundbreaking blend from Nick Melillo of Foundation Cigar Company, made to the exacting nature of Highclere Castle Cigar.
These exceptionally unusual and perfectly balanced tobaccos create a phenomenal flavour profile, one which many strive for, yet few achieve. Whilst being as a mild to medium bodied cigar, the Highclere Castle Victorian is incredibly full in flavour, with great development. Distinguished espresso, oak, caramel, maple and black pepper all meld in to a viscous and creamy feel on the palate, changing distinctly with each third and developing to a gloriously mineral rich finish. The Highclere Castle Victorian is a true expression of the beautiful nature of cigars in the 19th century, a cigar straight from an era when cigars changed the world, encounter by encounter.
A balanced yet peppery first half of an inch develops quickly into a characteristically creamy, oaky base. Notes of nougat, caramel and espresso are expressed throughout the cigar’s development, with a gentle yet distinct maple woodiness increasing alongside body.
