Oliva are currently one of the most preeminent cigar brands in the world. Based in Esteli, Nicaragua, Oliva can trace their history all the way back to when Melanio Oliva cultivated his first tobacco crop in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba in 1886. Melanio, and then his son Facundo Oliva who took over in the 1920's, continued to farm tobacco and then go into the brokering of tobacco building up quite a solid business. It wasn't until the 1960's when communism really took hold of Cuba, that Gilberto Oliva, Facundo's son, felt the need to leave and search for a new home.
Having spent several years moving from various countries, such as Honduras, Panama, Mexico and the Philippines, he finally set up home, along with his son, Gilberto Jnr, in Nicaragua in 1995. The search for the perfect, fertile soils and the near perfect climate had paid off handsomely. Today, Oliva are, without a doubt, one of the best cigar producers on the planet producing a diverse range of award winning cigars. The latest release from Oliva celebrates the Chinese New Year, which is Year Of The Snake.
These Churchill sized cigars (7 inches by 50 ring gauge) are big, not only in stature, but also flavour too. Limited to only 3,500 boxes of 10 cigars, these will not be around for long. This is Oliva's 2nd foray into cigars that celebrate the Chinese New Year (last years Year of the Dragon was only available through China Duty Free Group).

The cigar arose from a simple conversation between Montag and Fred Vandermalie, CEO of VCF, the mother company of Oliva Cigar Company. Both men started talking about the introspective power of both classical music and cigars. Aficionados will be able to scan a QR code to access Paul Montag’s album when they embark on their mixed music and cigar experience. The partnership is linked to the launch of the Serie V Melanio Gran Toro Edición Año 2024, this 5 1/2 x 60 cigar has the exact same Serie V Melanio wrapper, filler and binder that brings so many aficionados to enjoy & celebrate Oliva’s craftsmanship.
The Serie V Melanio is full flavoured yet smooth. The long filler tobaccos are a blend of Oliva Nicaraguan Habano that emphasizes tobacco from the Jalapa region, an area known for a more nuanced leaf than the Estelí or Condega regions. This carefully aged Jalapa blend produces a particularly flavoured smoke.

This is one of those cigars which really is the real deal. Medium to full-bodied, it starts initially with a burst of sweet leather, spice and nuts and progressively moves towards coffee and earth as you smoke down the stick. There is good intensity in the flavours which persist until the last draw. I love the shape and the fact that it is box-pressed too - it just ticks all my boxes!
