IN THE GRAND YEAR OF 1863, a gentleman by the name of Frederick Charatan graced bustling London with a boutique to delight the most discerning tobacco enthusiasts. Nestled in Mansell Street, near the iconic Tower of London - decades before Tower Bridge was even dreamt of - a legacy of tradition, an ode to flavours and enamouring smoke was born.

For 160 years, the name Charatan has been synonymous with British love for exquisite tobacco in the form of premium hand-rolled cigars, pipe tobacco and handcrafted pipes. As historic and meaningful to the United Kingdom as London's Underground and the English Football Association, both of which were also founded in 1863, we do not take the remarkable heritage of Charatan lightly.

To celebrate the 160th anniversary Charatan has released this wonderful, extremely limited, Special Edition. Join us in celebrating the exceptional journey of an immigrant family name now quintessential in British culture.

The Charatan 160th Anniversary cigar is a brilliantly smooth and tastefully creamy masterpiece. This cigar measures an impressive 6 ½ x 44. The wrapper is Ecuadorian Connecticut, Binder is Mexican and the Filler is Nicaragua (Jalapa). This is VERY LIMITED with only 250 boxes of 16 available to the whole of the UK.

The most famous cigar brand on the planet! This particular size of Cohiba is one to enjoy in the morning as it has plenty of taste to sharpen the palate. This was the favourite size of Emilia Tamayo who was the Director of El Laguito factory, the home of Cohiba brand. Emilia was the first woman ever to manage a Havana factory.

Every year around this time I task myself with deciding my top 5 cigars for the year, which sounds like an easy task to do in theory, but in practice is much more difficult. Even from day to day my choices could change, which makes compiling a list rather tricky!

After much thought and wringing of hands, I have finally got there and picked my top 5 for year...one cigar from last years top 5 almost made it again Rocky Patel Sixty Sixty but it was just pipped by the Frued SuperEgo Toro.

So without further adieu ....

1. Olmec Toro - Nicaragua. Connecticut Broadleaf is given a starring role here and what a performer it is - this is bang on the money being richly flavoured, earthy and velvetty. Great with coffee, rum or friends!

2. Charatan 160th Anniversary - Nicaragua Silky, smooth and elegant, just like me! Similar to Cuba's Cohiba, but a third of the price!

3. Oscar 10th Anniversary Toro - Honduras Made by Rocky Patels former Tour Guide bus driver - Big and bold with a deep earthy, almost biscuity edge to it. Totally stunning!

4. Partagas Maduro No.1 - Cuba Made with specially selected leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone in the Pinar del Río region of Cuba, these offer up some great complexity and depth of flavour. The wrapper is made using only the best leaves harvested from the top portion of Shade Grown tobacco plants, all of which have seen an additional period of fermentation to develop that rich texture and intense colour. Always great and never disappoints!

5. Freud SuperEgo Toro - Dominican Republic Made by Eladio Dias, former master blender at Davidoff. This is nothing like any Davidoff I have tried (OK, I haven't tried that many!). This dispalys a rich tapestry of flavours, including notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and subtle spices, creating a harmonious and indulgent blend.

The overturned. This is what ‘La Volcada’ directly translates to, although that’s not exactly what this cigar is about. The term ‘La Volcada’ comes from a step in the tango dance that originated in Uruguay where Litto Gomez grew up and this cigar celebrates his Uruguayan heritage.

This is the third instalment in an unofficial series of small batch cigars released by La Flor Domincana; the first being La Nox and the second the Andalusian Bull. An oily San Andres wrapper covers an Ecuadorian Corojo binder and filler from the Dominican Republic. Featuring a knotted pigtail cap this cigar has notes of leather, coffee and pepper with spicy undertones and an open, even draw.

he SV-Cut Cigar Cutter is a two-in-one combination of the insanely popular Colibri V-Cut and S-Cut cigar cutters.

The SV-Cut conveniently combines the V-Cut and S-Cut into one amazing cigar cutter without giving up any functionality or ease of use. The V-side of the SV-Cut uses the same blade as the original V-Cut and provides the identical clean “V”. The depth of the “V” is easily regulated by holding the cigar head a bit further out—so cutting a smaller wedge out of Lanceros or Figurados is just as easy.

On the S-side (straight cut), the aperture is slightly larger and could accommodate up to a 68-70-ring cigar. The cut is governed to 3mm.

The trigger release for both blades is located on the V-side. The ergonomic shape and spring-loaded blades make cutting with either side almost as much of a pleasure as smoking the cigar itself. Both sides of the body are textured with a pachmayr pattern for a sure grip.

Using tobaccos aged 6 years prior to construction and then a further two years after being rolled, the Sixty is really special. The construction is superb and the flavours just leap out of the cigar and dance around the palate. There is a lot happening from the first draw and it just gets better from there. Smooth and elegant with notes of leather, coffee, nuts and straw which are all backed up by a wonderful, dark earthiness.

This pack contains 5 petit panatela sized cigars which will smoke for roughly 15 - 20 minutes each - the ideal amount of time for a quick walk of the dog! There is nothing in this pack that is too full-bodied, so this would suit novices and experienced cigar smokers alike.

This is a limited release of 5000 boxes of 20 cigars and is only available the one size. This is a full bodied cigar with great intensity of flavour. Pepin and his son Jaime meticulously choose the tobaccos from aged and rare parcels to create this wonderful blend.

The Smoking Moses RazorCut impresses with its unmistakable design and the uniqueness of the combination of a hollow blade cutter and a moveable razor blade. Due to the guideway of the razor blade, the knife not only moves from top to bottom but and that's the innovation the knife is also pushed forward at the same time. La Invicta Honduran Robusto - Light Bodied A very easy-going, medium-bodied smoke at a cracking price. Great value when compared to many European brands at the same kind of price.

Flor De Nicaragua Robusto - Medium Bodied This is a great value for money cigar - nice and earthy with some gorgeous nutty notes - this has a little bit of spice on the final third and goes great with coffee.

La Aurora Principe Claro Robusto - Medium Bodied They have a very gentle spice to them which lifts the palate somewhat. These represent great value when compared to other brands at a similar price.

Quorum Shade Robusto - Light to Medium Bodied A more recent extension to the Quorum range that uses a shade grown Connecticut wrapper which adds a gentle spiciness to the ensemble. An ideal cigar for a beginner as it is not too full-bodied.

Juliany Maduro Robusto - Medium Bodied Made using the finest aged tobaccos, these relatively inexpensive cigars offer a medium-weight smoke that have a touch of earthiness to them.
